Implementation
Maths at Emerson Valley follows the 2014 National Curriculum and the Teaching for Mastery approach, using White Rose Maths for Years 3 to 6. Lessons are structured sequentially, with small, connected steps building on prior learning. A concrete, pictorial, and abstract approach helps pupils develop conceptual understanding.
Teachers use scaffolding, questioning, rapid intervention, and enrichment activities to support all learners. Most pupils progress at a similar pace, with advanced learners tackling complex problems and those needing more support receiving additional practice. Gaps in understanding are addressed within and outside lessons. Consistency in teaching is ensured through high-quality resources.
Impact
The curriculum's impact on pupils' development is assessed both formatively and summatively through regular teacher assessments, NFER, and past SATs tests. In-school moderation by year group teams, the Mathematics leader, and senior leaders ensures consistent progress. Teaching and learning are monitored to maintain high standards. By the end of Year 6, pupils are well-prepared for secondary school and beyond in their mathematical journey.
