Music
“Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.” National Curriculum 2014
Intent
Our curriculum empowers children to become musicians by: Performing, listening to, and evaluating diverse music from various historical periods, genres, and styles.
Singing, composing, using instruments, and leveraging technology to enhance their musical skills.
Exploring music creation, production, and communication through key musical elements like pitch, dynamics, and notation.
Implementation
Music skills are taught once a week during music lessons and pupils also engage in a singing assembly once a week. Lessons are planned with clear outlines of knowledge and vocabulary that children must master throughout their time at the school, ensuring progression and depth. Formal assessments take place at the end of each unit of work through performances and written compositions as well as ongoing assessment throughout units of work to ensure a depth to the pupils understanding.
Impact
The Music curriculum at Emerson Valley is designed to promote steady progress, enabling children to excel in their musical abilities. Students will learn to play and compose for various instruments, including recorder, keyboard, and guitar, as well as perform in large ensembles. As students gain confidence, they will improve their performance skills, develop a deeper understanding of music analysis using the Elements of Music, and be able to compose across different genres and instruments.
